Hey there 🙂

Here’s the sketch from this week, I also worked on the flowers and gloves painting a bit, but I will add that when it’s finished 🙂

“Raise These Hands”

Hey there!

It seems the theme of this week has been hands. I did a couple sketches (which you will see) and also happened to do some hand tracing and both my jobs (with kids and teens).

This first sketch is a contour line drawing of my hand with a tattoo, which I would like to get (but at this point it’s unlikely). It says “ars gratia dei”, which is latin for “art for God’s sake” or “art for the glory of God”. It’s a spin off of the MGM lion logo which says “ars gratia ars” or “art for art’s sake”. This phrase carries a lot of weight for me and I think it would make a cool tattoo.

Anyways, here’s the sketch:

The second drawing contains lyrics from “I Will Wait” by Mumford and Sons. In the background there is the shape of a hand.

I like these lyrics because they paint such a beautiful image of life in Christ. The colour gold is heavenly, majestic, and valuable. Christ sees our souls as extremely valuable. So valuable, in fact, that he died on the cross for all our screw-ups and failures and took it on himself so that we could live with him eternally.

True story. 😛

Damn These Walls

Hello.

The last week and a half I’ve been listening to a couple different albums non-stop. The first is Ghost by Coldplay. The songs Magic, Ink, and A Sky Full of Stars are definitely my favourite. The second album is by Birdy and is called Fire Within. They’re both super chill but powerful albums. The sketch I did uses theh lyrics “Damn these walls” from Birdy’s song Wings.

These words really resonate with me. I’m sure it’s a something pretty much everyone can connect with, but I know, at least for me this has been one of the recurring themes in my life. I have so many things I want to do, places I want to see, things I want to accomplish. Yet I have limits, both internal and external. There are walls that keep me from the things I want.

I get frustrated with myself for not being single-minded, determined, or self-disciplined enough. When I do have the drive to get down to work, other things get in the way. Unavoidable, necessary, and even good things.

It is the “inward” walls that I feel spiteful towards. The walls that I wish I had more control over. The walls that I feel I should have more control over.

I think it is a result of the fall in creation and that when we get to be with Jesus one day we won’t have these limitations that keep us from reaching our full potential. But for now there is almost a beauty in having to struggle for the things we want in life. Things don’t come easy, which make them all the more special when we put in the work and earn them. And I’m not just talking about art. Obviously that is what I’m talking about as it applies to me mostly, but these thoughts could apply to any other kind of life goal or dream.

Anyways, speaking of limits, I have to leave for work now. But as a final thought, here is a song that relates to this topic.

It’s called Limitations by Trip Lee ft. Leah Smith. Here’s the Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOgILKFF1bE

Paintings for the Public!

Hello, hello.

So there are a few things that need to be said here and the best will be last.

First, here is the retro house in painting form. After painting the sky I realized that the house was no longer going to be the focus so I turned it into a sillhouette.

Second, is the start of the new series that I am currently working on. They will be still life paintings based off of photos I took for a previous blog post. I really enjoy trying out different subject matter and I haven’t done a still life in a long time so I am happy just to focus on the colours and making them look pretty.

This first painting is partially done, and although it doesn’t show in the picture I used a gold paint in some areas which gives it a nice sheen from certain angles.

This one shows the underpainting, which I didn’t actually do with paint, just to confuse you. 😛 I tried a new technique where I coloured the canvas with chalk pastel and then sprayed it with water and used a paintbrush just to move the colours around the way I wanted them.

And this one is still in the earliest stages, you can still see the grid lines from transferring the image. I So far I just have the basic shapes, I still need to draw the details inside the jar.

And finally.. duh, duh, duuhh!!! I have some exciting news which includes me having my own booth at an arts festival on June 6th!!! It’s called How Great Thou ArtsFestival and will be hosted from 1-7pm in Mission BC. There will be approximately 50 artist booths there!

Here’s the poster for all the deets:

So yeah, I’m super excited because I’ve never done anything like this before and it feels like a step forward. I hope to see you there, but I’m also looking forward to meeting new people as well!

Helloo!

Things are exciting around here! Last night I picked up our new little puppy, Romeo. He is a beautiful little german shepherd and is very affectionate. 🙂

It was also amusing watching my cat Daisy react to her new companion and see them interact…

I also got a few spring time decorations for the house and had fun rearranging things. It always feels good to change out the winter decor for a more spring feel. It’s like I am officially acknowledging the new season.

And finally, here’s the little bit of art I accomplished this week. The sketch was done while nannying.. The little girl I work with was colouring her thing and I was drawing.. sometimes you just have to take the opportunities as they come.

Here’s my progress on the retro house painting.. the sky is the only thing that’s really done, although I want to add some stars somehow.
